Why you should try chamomile tea before bed

When it's time to wind down, a warm cup of tea can help carry your mind and body to a place of rest. There's a long list of bedtime teas out there, each claiming to help you drift to sleep with ease and awaken refreshed. At the top of every list, you're bound to find chamomile. It's loved for its soothing qualities, floral taste and how easy it is to brew.

Firstly, what is chamomile tea?

There are multiple types of chamomile plants, and they all look similar to a daisy flower. The most common are Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile. To make chamomile tea, the flowers are carefully picked and dried – then ready for you to enjoy.

What does chamomile tea taste like?

Our Just Chamomile blend contains one ingredient – high-grade plump Egyptian chamomile blossoms selected for their intensely honey-like aroma and refined, soothing flavour. Other sleep tea blends add bolder, fruity and herbal ingredients to sweeten or subdue the subtle taste of chamomile, while still reaping the benefits.

Can chamomile tea improve sleep?

Folklore says ancient Egyptians used chamomile tea to treat nervous tension, Mediaeval Europeans used chamomile salve on dry skin, and the Aztec civilization of Mexico used the plant as a cure-all remedy for centuries. It's clear many swear by its soothing effects, and some evidence can back this up. However, most studies note there is a need for more research to have conclusive results.

One study reported postpartum women with poor sleep quality noted improvements in sleep after sipping chamomile tea over two weeks. This study suggested chamomile could act as a supplementary approach to lessening sleep problems.

Another review found chamomile to be effective for enhancing sleep quality and reducing symptoms, while not having an impact on insomnia.
