Derived from the leaves of a native South African plant, Rooibos tea is enjoyed globally but grown locally in the mountains north of Cape Town. With a sweet and nutty flavour, Rooibos tea is well known for its antioxidant properties, which offer a range of health benefits to all who choose to sip this herbal brew.

Creating the perfect blends

The sweet and subtle flavours in this herbal tea allow for some brilliant blending opportunities, creating the wonderful collection of Rooibos teas (pronounced Roy-Boss) that you can find in T2. Tasty-toasty flavours shine through in our Macadamia Brittle, while those with a sweeter tooth will enjoy the caramel undertones of our Sticky Date Delight. The stonefruit flavours of the Red Green & Dreamy are reminiscent of a sunny summer’s day, and the minty hints of the Red Choc Mint are perfect for a cold winter morning. There’s a Rooibos tea for every occasion and season in the T2 store.

A quick overview of Rooibos tea

Rooibos and Honeybush teas have been brewing in southern Africa for over 300 years. Earning a valuable place in local medicine for their high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, Rooibos tea and its benefits are now being recognised by science. As this local herbal remedy continues to gain popularity across the globe, tea drinkers now have the opportunity to reap the benefits delivered with every sip.

A herbal sipping superpower

Rooibos tea comes from the Aspalathus Linearis plant and is known locally as Red tea or Red Bush tea. The leaves of this native shrub are fermented, which gives the brew its red hue, while drawing out the sweet flavours that so many people have come to adore. Non-fermented leaves produce what is known as Green Rooibos, which also has its own range of herbal benefits. This is one top plant for creating good-for-you beverages that taste delicious.

The best way to brew a cup of Rooibos tea

How you brew your Rooibos tea makes all the difference to the overall flavour and your enjoyment of every cup. As with all tea varieties, there are ways to brew your tea that will ensure you extract the height of flavour and the perfect aroma so that you can enjoy every sip.

Prepare your cup

One of the major steps that many forget when brewing tea is to prepare the cup first. Tea mugs are typically made from ceramic that is designed to hold temperature for longer periods. By pouring hot water to warm up your cup before pouring your tea, you are ensuring that your cup will keep your tea warm for the longest time so that you can relax and enjoy your brew without it going cold.

Choose your instruments

How you brew your tea often depends on personal preference. Some prefer to use specially designed infusers that allow Rooibos Tea’s nuanced flavours to steep and develop, while others opt for the classic teapot and strainer that can give you more control over your brewing process and create an elegant setting to host guests with our elegant teaware.

Not too hot and not too cold

Goldilocks was right on the mark when it came to temperatures being just right. Each tea benefits from a specific water temperature that brings out the best of the brew. Herbal concoctions like Honeybush and Rooibos tea are best brewed at 100 degrees Celsius for 3-5 minutes to draw out the delicious flavours and aromas they are renowned for.
